What’s Your Active Holiday Style? Guided or Self-Guided

Gone are the days of relying on just guided holidays to bring you places. With the use of technology for assistance, you can now also embark on self-guided holidays too. Which style to go for may depends on which destinations you choose and ultimately, what suits your travel personality more. It is important to know what each style entails so that you can make an informed decision during the booking process. Read on to find out more.

What is a self-guided active holiday?

Self-guided active holidays are about offering you the flexibility to explore and comfortably pace yourself as you savour the local sights and delights. Start your day as you wish each morning and enjoy detours and side trips as you make your way to the next location.

You are not limited by the constraints of group travel and you are free to shorten and fast track your hike or ride as the route permits. You may even take a day off the activitymaking your travel to the next accommodation by taxi or public transportation.

Travel light every day and only bring along what you need during the activity (hiking or cycling) as all key logistics will be well taken care of for you. A self-guided active holiday will entail:

  • Daily accommodation booking

  • Daily breakfasts and occasional dinners

  • Luggage transfer from one accommodation to another

  • Information document pack including detailed route notes & maps

  • Detailed GPS map markings (may be provided for certain destinations)

  • 24-hour emergency support hotline

  • Rental bicycles (for cycling trips)

If booked in advance, self-guided holidays also allow you to enjoy extra nights within the itinerary if you wish to
spend another day or two.

What is a guided active holiday?

If you prefer the company of an expert local guide and a small group of like-minded travelling companions, guided holidays would be the go-to option. The maximum group size ranges from 16 to 20 people to create intimate camaraderie among one another. Guided active holidays usually include:

  • Daily accommodation booking

  • Daily breakfasts, occasional lunch and dinners

  • Luggage transfer from one accommodation to another

  • Local expert guide

  • Rental bicycles and support vehicle (for cycling trips)

Booking of extra
night’s stay will have to be done before or after a guided holiday. Some guided holidays may require you to travel a day earlier due to the early morning start on the first day.
